What does this module cover?

The aim of this CPD module is to enable you to develop your knowledge of cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) and how to manage the condition, in order to confidently advise, support, and reassure parents and carers.

This CPD module uses the most up to date guidance available from the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN)1, the Milk Allergy in Primary Care (iMAP)2, and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)3.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the prevalence and burden of CMPA for patients and carers
  • Recognise how CMPA is classified (IgE mediated vs non-IgE-mediated)
  • Understand how CMPA is diagnosed
  • Explore the management of CMPA in breast-fed and formula-fed infants
  • Understand reintroduction of cow’s milk protein in infants with non-IgE-mediated CMPA, including “the milk ladder”
  • Signpost parents to relevant resources which may provide them with further information if required
