Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland’s annual black tie event on 13 June, hosted at the spectacular Great Hall in Queen’s University Belfast. Pharmacy’s biggest names were invited from across the UK to the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland’s annual black tie event on 13 June, hosted at the spectacular Great Hall in Queen’s University Belfast. The very special occasion, which recognised nineteen pharmacists’ fifty years of dedicated service to the profession, awarded Prof Sean Gorman a Fellowship and saw a personal tribute to pre-registration facilitator Dr Eileen Scott, was attended by over 150 pharmacists, colleagues, family and friends. Conservative MP and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Lord Trimble was welcomed as the guest speaker who had some advice to head during these uncertain times for the profession. “As the role of the pharmacist expands and diversifies, it will of course allow for greater opportunity to work with other health and social care professionals,” he said. “My advice is to at all times try and show empathy for these other health experts. Having a common goal, such as improving patient care, is not always enough. It is important to integrate working without jeopardising what you already may have established.“The discussions surrounding ‘polyclinics’ have mainly focused around the interests of GPs, although this is an opportunity for much broader and wider integration and cross workings to ultimately improve patient outcomes.” Lord Trimble also commended the Society on its recent political lobbying. President of the PSNI Raymond Anderson discussed how, in the year that the NHS celebrates its 60th year, pharmacy and healthcare has evolved since 1948. “Pharmacy used to be restricted to the dispensary and extemporaneous dispensing was found throughout,” he said. “Now we have extremely sophisticated specials manufacturers and are at the centre of research and development. Some of our guests here this evening will have witnessed such tremendous change over a number of years and will be as interested as those still practising in how the profession will continue to change shape.”Congratulations to all those who received 50 Year Certificates.
